Wildcamping Dartmoor

So I left Zürich on the 10:40 CEST BA flight to Heathrow, landed around 11:30 BST picked up my Sixt hire car (that was interesting – arrive terminal 5, phone a number to then get picked up my mini bus and taken to the car hire base). Now I have the car, next stop Princetown on Dartmoor!

It took about 4 hours to get from Heathrow to Princetown, not bad going, met up with my camping buddy and went to put the cars in a car park half way between princetown and where we were staying the night on Dartmoor. As I was really hungry and wanted a proper meal rather than cooking on the stove we then walked back into Princetown to have a lovely meal at the Plume of Feathers, great choice on the menu and the specials board, but if you arrive after 19:00 you will struggle to find a table so worth booking in advance.

After food we then hiked back to the car, picked up the camping gear and set off in the opposite direction, heading towards somewhere my friend wild camps quite often as its near fresh water.

We pitched the tent as it was going dark and the mist was starting to roll in and it literally came in so quickly that by the time we had the tent up we couldn’t see much of what was around us. We had our brew for the evening then settled in listening to the wind and the rain that had just arrive.

Waking up the next morning the mist was still in so we packed up our kit and headed back to the car, then popped into the Fox Tor Cafe for a great breakfast.

I’m now planning on going back and spending a few nights on Dartmoor, such great fun.
