Brig

We had a long weekend away in Brig with the folks, Brig was the choice as it was central to the places we want to visit – Zermatt, Aletsch, Saas Fee… We’d been warned that Brig was industrial and not a very nice place to stay, but we’d picked in for location over anything else.

So we booked the Hotel Europe as this was close to the station (literally across the road), we drove up and immediately we notice parking was going to be an issue, they had a limited number of spaces, one of which blocks four others in, but the entire time we were there we had one of the spaces to use.  We’d booked a double room and when we got up to the room it seems like they’d misread the booking as the room was set up for 1 not 2, something they quickly remediated for us. Luckily the room was at the back of the hotel, therefore there was a lot less noise from the station (we never noticed the trains, just the announcements which stopped overnight). The room was basic but clean, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom could use a little updating but most importantly the dogs were welcome. Breakfast was included in the room rate, although the selection was small it was a good quality. All in all a pleasant trip although I would say that the rooms were overpriced, we could have had a 3/4 star hotel in Saas Fee for the same price.

Brig itself is a nice little town, enough shops on the main street for you to go at, there is a good selection of restaurants and its nice to go for a walk along the river in the evenings. There is a Schloss to have a look at and the old town itself is nice for a walk around.

Brig works as a great base for exploring the Wallis.
