Picking a new camera

So I wanted a new camera, for two reasons mainly – 1. My iPhone camera was taking nearly as good pictures as my actually camera 2. Trying to take pictures on my iPhone in the snow was a pain.

This then led me to a choice – what type of camera do I want, did I want a DSLR, a normal point and shoot, something in between or something a bit different. I ruled out the DSLR – mainly because it doesn’t just fit in my pocket.. I looked at the more compacts with changable lens and came to the same conclusion wasn’t practical for what I wanted it for. Which left me at a normal point and shoot – or did it? I looked at when i wanted the camera for and it was when my phone just wasnt necessarily practical, so when out biking or snowboarding etc so I needed something that could withstand being thrown in a bag and getting a bit wet, whether from the rain or the snow… this then pointed me in the direction of the “tough” cameras.

So in reading a few reviews including this one from whatdigital camera I’d narrowed the choice down to two – the Panasonic Lumix FT3 or the Sony Cybershot TX10. In the end I plumped for the Panasonic – it arrived yesterday 🙂 Its a bit heavier than expected but photo quality on the tests I’ve taken is good and I took a few photos from the fishtank and this worked well…

Now – to take it out and do some proper tests with it. First test was actually just a day at the fair – but here are the results (some taken with the new camera some with my iPhone4)
